Thank God for the Fire Service and the Police !
In the early hours of this morning (Thursday) an accelerant was used to start a fire at Friends of the Animals offices on Riverway, Newport.
Our security camera clearly shows a flash occur at 12-49 am as the fire was started and within one minute smoke is seen wafting across the building.
A nearby worker spotted flames and a man running off up the road (in the direction of the Café) and immediately called the emergency services.
Two Fire Appliances and the Police arrived on site within five minutes of the arson attack and told us they were ‘just’ in time to prevent the fire from spreading to the main body of the building.
A Company arrived and has boarded up the front of the building and a Lifeline engineer had to be called out to clear the smoke and re-set the fire alarm.
We are HUGELY grateful to everyone who came to our assistance last night. Thank you all. Our lives are spent helping animals – and people – and we are all utterly dismayed that anyone would have done this.
Corona virus has hit Friends of the Animals hard. For a long time, we have been the only island Charity helping the public with the cost of veterinary treatment for sick and injured animals and this shocking act is the last thing we needed.
Police consider last nights’ arson attack so serious, that Scenes of Crime Officers are coming over from the mainland today. Sadly, this event has cost our animals and we would be very grateful for any help our supporters can give us.
